pia's white dress

every morning mama washes
pia's white dress clean;
then she wears it to the sea.
the sands colour it golden,
on a cloudy day, the sea makes it grey
and just when she is leaving for home
the coconut palms fringe it green.

every morning mama washes
pia's white dress clean;
then she wears it to the sea.
the corals colour it pink, sometimes fawn,
often blue
and the jelly fish leaves purple lights on it too.
The sandy crabs leave little claw marks.
and the yellow and black fish
frill the edge with their little stripes.

this morning when mama went to wash
pia's white dress clean;
it took her a little longer than usual
she had to wash off the bird song,
and the roar of the waves.
the sound of the wind and the sound of the rain.
then the butterflies had left myriad hues.

every morning mama washes
pia's white dress clean;
then she wears it to the sea.

The poem has a subtly sad end to it which gives it a certain charm. My understanding is that... Just as the very caring mama washes pia's dress everyday, it is unbeknownst to her that she is not only washing the dirty shades away but also the memories and the tranquility or the peace of mind that pia gets on her beach patrols because she eventually takes time and washes away even the Bird song and the sound of the rain which actually symbolize happiness n joys of life.
In my view, I think this poem has a lot of relevance in the lives of the present young-adults and their relationship with a parent. Just as pia's mama washes out the joys unintentionally, even if it takes longer than usual out of motherly concern, u make the reader wonder weather the concern of parents is taking away much more of the children that what is supposed to be taken or restricted. Poet, u try to show the communication gap between the child and the parent but also cover it up by portraying how the child adjusts and goes on with the life that he is bound to live as she has no other choice.
I personally loved the poem. Looking forward to read more such wonders :) - Niks G
